Resort Transportation Ranked: Monorail vs. Skyliner vs. Bus, by Time Saved

Three Disney resorts sit on the monorail and four on the Skyliner. Everyone else rides the bus or a boat, including resorts in the same price category. Here's which transportation actually saves you time, where the Skyliner lets you down, and the resort swaps worth making.

Quick Answer: Your resort decides your park commute more than almost anything else you pay for. Disney's three monorail resorts put you at Magic Kingdom in minutes, and its four Skyliner resorts get a gondola to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios that other resorts in the same price band don't. Everyone else rides the bus, which works fine but costs you time twice a day.

Most families pick a Disney resort on pools, theming and price. Almost nobody picks one on transportation, and it's the thing you'll use every single day of the trip.

Our take: a monorail or Skyliner resort is absolutely worth paying more for. The time it saves goes straight into making the most of your trip, and if you're pushing a stroller, folding it for every bus ride is a real pain.

Four ways to get to the parks

Disney's resort transportation page lists four free options: monorail, Skyliner, bus and boat. Buses link Disney's resorts with all four theme parks. Only a handful of resorts get anything faster.

The monorail resorts: Magic Kingdom in minutes

Exactly three resorts sit on the monorail loop: the Contemporary, the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian Village.

Two of them are close enough that you might not bother with the train. The walk from the Contemporary to Magic Kingdom takes about 10 minutes, often quicker than the monorail, which stops at the other hotels first. The Grand Floridian's walkway takes 10 to 15 minutes. From the Polynesian, the resort monorail gets you to Magic Kingdom in about 10 minutes.

If Magic Kingdom is the heart of your trip, and especially if you've got little ones who need a midday nap, this is the biggest transportation edge at Walt Disney World.

The Skyliner resorts: fast, until it storms

The Disney Skyliner connects four resorts, Art of Animation, Caribbean Beach, Pop Century and Riviera, to Hollywood Studios and EPCOT's International Gateway. A normal ride takes around 15 minutes.

The weak spot is weather. Central Florida's near-daily summer storms can each knock out "at least one hour" of Skyliner service, Disney Food Blog reports, and the crowded replacement buses can turn a 15-minute trip into a much longer one. In summer, plan your EPCOT and Studios afternoons knowing you might end up on a bus anyway. Our weather tool for Walt Disney World shows how stormy your month tends to be.

Same category, faster ride: the swaps worth making

Pop Century instead of an All-Star. Pop Century and the three All-Star resorts are all Value resorts, but only Pop Century (and its neighbor Art of Animation) is on the Skyliner; the All-Stars are bus-only. That's a gondola to two of the four parks without leaving the Value tier, the easiest upgrade on the whole property.

Think twice about Animal Kingdom Lodge if you'll hop around. It's a Deluxe resort like the monorail three, but it has no monorail, Skyliner or boat. You're paying Deluxe rates for the savanna view, not the commute: a fine trade if the animals are the point.

Riviera is the Deluxe Skyliner pick. It's the only Deluxe (Deluxe Villa) resort on the Skyliner.

Get the monorail without the Deluxe cash rate

Several of these resorts are also Disney Vacation Club properties: Bay Lake Tower sits beside the Contemporary, the Villas at the Grand Floridian and Polynesian Villas & Bungalows are on the same monorail loop, and Riviera is itself a DVC resort. Renting DVC points there gets you the same commute without paying the hotel's cash rate. Our DVC Rent vs Rack calculator shows what that looks like for your dates.

So, which should you book?

If your trip centers on Magic Kingdom and your budget stretches to Deluxe (or a DVC rental), a monorail resort is worth it; you'll feel the difference by day two. On a Value budget, pick Pop Century or Art of Animation over the All-Stars for the Skyliner, unless you're traveling in peak storm season and mostly heading to Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom anyway.

If you're staying off the monorail and Skyliner, don't stress: the bus runs from 45 minutes before opening to an hour after close. Just leave a little earlier.
