Rope Drop at Disney World: Times, Best Park and Which Ride First (2027)
Does Disney World still do rope drop? Yes. When to be at the gate, how Early Entry changes it, why Magic Kingdom is the park we'd rope drop, and how to pick which ride goes first.
Quick Answer: Yes, Disney World still does rope drop, and it's still the free way to skip a line: be through security and at the turnstiles about 30 minutes before official opening, or 30 minutes before Early Entry if you're staying at a Disney Resort hotel (45 minutes at Magic Kingdom). Magic Kingdom is the park we'd rope drop, heading for a Fantasyland ride that normally has a long wait. Disney sets the exact times by date, so check My Disney Experience for yours.
Picture the walk to the front of a park an hour before it opens: strollers, lanyards and a surprising amount of purpose. Everyone is headed for the same few rides. That's rope drop, and it's the best use of a Disney morning we know of, because the lines are at their shortest and nobody has paid for anything.
Does Disney still do rope drop?
It does. Rope drop just means getting to the park early enough to be among the first people through the gates, which is good touring strategy in Touring Plans' words. At Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland, for example, guests are held at an actual rope until the cast walks them to their rides.
There are two versions. Guests at Disney Resort hotels and select other hotels get Early Theme Park Entry: 30 minutes inside each Walt Disney World theme park before it opens, every day of the stay, check-in and check-out days included. Disney says the benefit continues through 2027. Everyone else rope drops at official opening. Not every ride runs during Early Entry, and Disney can change the schedule without notice.
What time to be there
The number that matters is when you're at the turnstiles, not when you park or step off the bus. That means through security and in line. Arriving right when Early Entry starts puts you well back in the crowd.
| You are | Be at the turnstiles |
|---|---|
| Resort guest, most parks | 30 minutes before Early Entry starts |
| Resort guest, Magic Kingdom | 45 minutes before Early Entry starts |
| Not a resort guest | 30 minutes before official opening |

Opening times change daily. Magic Kingdom's most common opening is 9 AM, according to Mouse Hacking, but check the app for your date and count back from there. The reward for being early is real: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and TRON Lightcycle / Run draw the biggest rope drop crowds at Magic Kingdom, so every minute you're early keeps you ahead of them.
Check the hours: pick your trip date in Parks Weather for the forecast, what to pack and all four parks' hours.
The best park for rope drop: Magic Kingdom
Our take: Magic Kingdom, hands down, is the park you can crush with rope drop. Aim for Fantasyland and run to a ride that normally has a long wait. One morning, we walked on Peter Pan's Flight, Winnie the Pooh, the Carousel and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (we had a Lightning Lane for that one), all before the park opened.
There's a reason it works. Most Fantasyland and Tomorrowland rides are running when Early Entry begins, with Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Dumbo, the Barnstormer and Peter Pan's Flight among the Fantasyland rides to rope drop. Adventureland, Frontierland and Liberty Square open to everyone right around official opening, about 30 minutes after Early Entry begins.
Which ride first
- Start with a ride that normally has a long wait. At Magic Kingdom that means Fantasyland, with the gentler rides, like the Carousel, saved for when you're off quickly.
- Let a Lightning Lane carry the headliner. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is one of five rides sold as a Single Pass, separate from Multi Pass, and we had a Lightning Lane for ours. If you'd rather not buy one, make it your first stop and see how the line looks, since a short wait isn't guaranteed.
- Have a backup. Mine Train sometimes opens late, so know your second choice before you head for Fantasyland.

When to skip it
If a very early alarm would cost you the rest of the day, skip it and rely on Lightning Lane for the big lines instead. Rope drop pays most for families who can manage the early start and still enjoy the afternoon.
